The UMass English Society’s success relies on the combined effort of students from numerous disciplines. We are not just English majors. We are an informal group from various backgrounds with a diverse array of beliefs and hobbies. However, we all have one thing in common, and that is an appreciation for good writing.
Meetings are held every Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. in Bartlett 262. On a typical Thursday, our meetings usually last between one to two hours. Members can bring literature to read, a story or poem that caught his/her interest, or just attentive ears to listen.
In our meetings, we also continue the tradition of reviewing submissions for our yearly journal of undergraduate student writing called "Jabberwocky." You are welcome to bring a piece of your own to read, bravely announced or anonymously read by someone else, and even ask fellow members for suggestions/comments on how they think you could improve your piece or style. There are no restrictions to what you can bring (why censor one's creativity?), just as long as it is all in good taste. However, make sure it is under four single spaced pages if you would also like a chance at having it published in Jabberwocky.
Please feel free to stop by Bartlett and pick-up a copy of the 2005 or 2006 issue. Both issues have incredible writing, but the layout and presentation of the 2006 issue was undeniably an upgrade.
Keep an eye on our blog for a link to read Jabberwocky 2006 electronically, photos of the 2006 unveiling ceremony, updated meeting times/changes, and more.
Besides producing "Jabberwocky," English Society has also started to run a Coffee Table in the lobby of Bartlett Hall. Yes, we are quite the entrepreneurs. See the Coffee Table page for more information, or be a generous patron one of these mornings.
Always, make sure to check the “What’s New” page for all future updates to this site. |
