Ocean Vuong Named 2019 MacArthur Fellow

Ocean Vuong, assistant professor in English, was recently honored as 2019 MacArthur Fellow in Fiction and Non-Fiction writing category. Vuong's debut novel, On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous, received much critical acclaim and was recently longlisted for the 2019 National Book Award in Fiction and as a Finalist for the Kirkus Book Award. It has also been named a Most Anticipated Book by The New York Times, Oprah.com, Vulture, Entertainment Weekly, Buzzfeed, Los Angeles Times, Boston Globe, Huffington Post, The Guardian, The A.V. Club, Nylon, The Rumpus, The Millions, Publishers Weekly, and more.
Vuong's work brings together "folkloric traditions with linguistic experimentation in works that explore the effects of intergenerational trauma, the refugee experience, and the complexities of identity and desire with eloquence and clarity."
