Composition and Rhetoric
Graduate students in rhetoric and composition typically teach College Writing or Basic Writing in the UMass Writing Program, winner of the CCCC Program of Excellence Award in 2009. Faculty rotate the directorship of the program. Haivan Hoang is the current director, taking over from David Fleming who served as director from 2007-2011. The department also maintains an active National Writing Project site (the Western Mass Writing Project). Charlie Moran was the founding site director in 1993. Anne Herrington has served as site director for the past six years, and Donna LeCourt will take over in Fall, 2013. Faculty also direct the University Writing Center which currently employs over 40 tutors and offers over 5,000 sessions a year. Rebecca Lorimer Leonard, new faculty in 2012-13, is the current director, taking over from Donna LeCourt.
Advanced graduate students have the opportunity to gain experience in these various programs by teaching upper-division courses in English (e.g. Writing and Emerging Technologies; Advanced Expository Writing) or in the Professional Writing and Technical Communication Program (e.g. , Technical Writing, Intermediate Professional Writing, Advanced Technical Writing), and to serve in administrative positions in the Writing Program (new teacher mentors, asst. director of placement), the Writing Center (assistant directors) or the Western Mass Writing Project.
