Professor John R. Nelson founded the Professional Writing and Technical Communication (PWTC) Program at the University of Massachusetts in 1990. Professor Nelson holds degrees from Hamilton College (B.A., 1959), the University of Maine (M.A., 1962), and the University of Oregon (Ph.D., 1967). He came to UMass in 1967 and has served as a Visiting Professor at the Summer Institute, Universities of Bordeaux, Pau, Toulouse (1970), Visiting Professor, Endresschule, Université de Saint Malo, (summer 1974), Villingen, Schwarzwald (summer 1977), and as an Exchange Professor at the Universities of Freiburg, (1971-1972), Stirling (Scotland, 1976-1977), and Kent (1988-1989).
