Professor and Director, Western Mass Writing Program

I have been at UMass since 1986. My primary areas of scholarly interest are the teaching of writing, writing across the curriculum, student development as writers, and qualitative research methodologies. My teaching reflects these interests, including graduate seminars on Research on Writing and Academic Discourses and Writing. At the undergraduate level I frequently teach our first year writing course and an upper level course for prospective teachers of writing. I am proud to have been awarded an Outstanding Teacher Award from the College of Humanities and Fine Arts in 1999.

My interests are reflected by the titles of recent publications. Two earlier books include Writing, Teaching and Learning in the Disciplines (MLA 1992), co-edited with Charles Moran, and Persons in Process: Four Stories of Writing and Personal Development in College (NCTE 2000), with Marcia Curtis. This book received the National Council of Teachers of English 2002 David H. Russell Award for Distinguished Research. Two recent articles are "What Happens When Machines Read Our Students' Writing?" (Herrington and Moran) College English 63 (March 2000) and "Writing Development in the College Years: By Whose Definition?" (Curtis and Herrington). College Composition and Communication (Sept. 2003). Most recently Charles Moran and I have published an edited collection, "Genre across the Curriculum" (Utah State UP, 2005 ) that examines how genre theory informs instruction in classes in various disciplines.

I directed our Undergraduate Writing Program from 1990-96. My University service includes being Co-Chair of the Academic Affairs Community, Diversity, and Social Justice Team and Chair of the English Department.
