What exactly do our students learn? English majors develop an understanding of literature, history, and culture; a sensitivity to the nuances of language; and strong writing skills.
The strength of our programs is tested by results. Currently, our PhD students hold the highest graduate placement record among all UMass graduate programs. Our MFA students publish widely. Our undergraduate majors customize their core coursework in literary studies with specializations that help them build skills in writing and digital technologies. The certificate program in Professional Writing and Technical Communication has placed nearly 100% of its students in industry jobs.
Our graduates go on to become informed citizens, successful professionals, and active participants in their own communities. Among our alums are teachers, web designers, grant writers, independent researchers, consultants, editors, creative writers, lawyers, professors, and entrepreneurs.
