TEACHING ASSOCIATE, TEACHING ASSISTANT, AND RESEARCH ASSISTANT POSITIONS are available throughout the university. You may contact MFA Headquarters for a list of some of the positions our candidates have recently held. While MFA candidates find work in a variety of contexts across campus, the most common appointments are to the University Writing Program and to undergraduate creative writing.

The University Writing Program, which oversees undergraduate composition courses, appoints more MFA candidates than any other single office. Writing Program Teaching Associate positions provide a stipend of approximately $14,516.00 per year, plus tuition, fee, and health waivers, bringing the total value of an associateship to approximately $40,594 for out-of-state candidates. In addition to providing funding for up to six semesters, many candidates find the experience of teaching in the Writing Program to be of great value to their pedagogical and professional development.

If you would like to be considered for a Writing Program Teaching Associate position you must complete a Writing Program application. We recommend that you include it with your MFA application (original manuscript and cover page) postmarked by December 15. However, you may submit it under separate cover to the same address postmarked by February 1. Hiring decisions are made by the Writing Program in consultation with the MFA Program on the basis of application materials and interview, available funding, and other considerations. If you choose not to seek a Writing Program appointment for your first year in the MFA Program, you may apply for your second year. However, due to the availability of positions and training considerations, we encourage all interested applicants to apply for this appointment while applying for admission to the MFA Program.

Undergraduate creative writing sections are typically awarded to MFA candidates in their second or third years in the program, however, occasionally a well-prepared, experienced applicant may be offered a one-semester appointment during his/her first year. These are non-renewable, one-semester appointments bringing a stipend of approximately $7,260 and a tuition and fee waiver.
