The Spring 2012 will be Tuesdays/Thursdays and a variety of weekend dates, January 31 through May 1.
This class is open to anyone who is interested in becoming an EMT and learning to save a life. You do not need to be a UMass Student to take this class. The class meets on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6:00pm- 10:00pm, as well as some Sunday days, in Draper Hall.
The class consists of approximately 130 hours, split between didactic lecture and hands on learning, where practical skills will be learned and perfected. Lead instructor for the program is Kevin Garvey, RN, EMT-I, I/C with Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Educators (PECE).
Our EMT program prepares students to take the Massachusetts state certification exam for EMT-basic. The exam consists of a practical exam and a 100 question written exam administered after the UMass class is completed. Once passing the state exam you can go on and work as an Emergency Medical Technician in Massachusetts; for example at UMass EMS or another response agency or service.
EMT certification is current for approximately two years from successfully passing the certification exam, during which time you must take continuing education classes for approved credit and a refresher course towards your recertification. You will receive information about recertifying requirements when you take the UMass class along with the availability con-ed classes and refresher courses. More detailed information on EMT certification and re-certification in Massachusetts can be found online through the Commonwealth's Office of Emergency Medical Services.
This course is like any other college course as it has readings and exams and is fairly demanding. Our class is not affiliated with the University as an academic class and therefore you do not receive college credit for this class nor does tuition or financial aid cover the cost of this class.
