Class Info (Updated 9/22/09)
UMass Amherst EMS offers an EMT Class during the Fall and Spring Semesters in addition to one during the Summer.
We are now accepting applications for the Spring 2010 EMT Class. This class is open to anyone who is interested in becoming an EMT and learning to save a life. You do not need to be a UMass Student to take this class. The class meets on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6:00pm- 10:00pm, as well as some Sunday days, in Draper Hall
The class consists of approximately 130 hours, split between didactic lecture and hands on learning, where practical skills will be learned and perfected.
Our EMT program prepares students to take the MA state practical exam at the end of the class, which you will take with your classmates, as well as a 100 question written exam taken individually. Once passing the state exam you can go on and work as an EMT, for example at UMass EMS. Your certification is good for 2 years during which time you will have to take con-ed classes for credit towards your recertification. You will receive information about recertifying when you take the UMass class and how to take the con-ed classes and a refresher course.
Our course is like any other college course, it has readings and exams and is fairly demanding. Our class is not affiliated with UMass and therefore you do not receive credit for this class at UMass nor does tuition or financial aid cover the cost of this class.
The total cost of the EMT Class is $700. Two non-refundable $100 deposit checks are required to secure a space in the class, one made out to UMASS EMS and the other to PECE.
Deposits and registraion forms can be sent together to our address at UMass EMS, c/o Environmental Health and Safety, Draper Hall, University of Massachusetts, Amherst, MA 01003.
The remaining $500 will be due once the class begins. This fee will cover the cost of the textbook, and all materials used in class. This fee does not cover the cost of the MA State EMT Certification Exam (which is usually $150 if you are eligiable to take the test). It also does not cover CPR certification if you need it.
If you are interested joining the class or would like more information, please contact us at ems@ehs.umass.edu or call us at 545-1885. You can also choose to arrange a meeting with the Director of Training at the UMass EMS office in the Draper Hall Annex and ask any questions personally as well as drop off your registraion and deposits.
