Awarded

Takes or verbalizes body substance isolation precautions

1

Determines if the victim is choking and obtains consent to intervene

1

Stands behind the victim, wraps arms around the victim’s waist, and makes

a fist with one hand

1

Places the thumb side of the fist against the victim’s abdomen, in the midline

slightly above the navel and well below the tip of the xiphoid process

1

Grasps the fist with the other hand and presses the fist into the victim’s

abdomen with a quick inward and upward thrust

1

Repeats the thrusts until the object is expelled from the airway or the victim

becomes unresponsive

1

Each new thrust is a separate and distinct movement administered with the

intent of relieving the obstruction

1

Repeats the sequence of attempts (and reattempts) to ventilate, Heimlich

maneuver, and tongue-jaw lift and finger sweep until the obstruction is

cleared or advanced procedures are available to establish a patent airway

1

If the FBAO is not removed, follows the procedures for FBAO in an 1

unconscious victim

1

If the FBAO is removed and the airway is cleared, checks breathing

1

If the victim is not breathing, provides rescue breaths; then checks for signs 1

of circulation (pulse check and evidence of breathing, coughing, or

movement); if there are no signs of circulation, begins chest compression.

1

If the victim is breathing or resumes effective breathing, places victim 1

in recovery position
