Points

Awarded

Takes or verbalizes body substance isolation precautions

1

Establishes unresponsiveness

1

Opens the airway and attempts to provide rescue breaths

1

If unable to make the chest rise, repositions the victim’s head (reopens the

airway) and tries to ventilate again

1

If the victim cannot be ventilated even after an attempt to reposition the

airway, straddles the victim’s knees and performs the Heimlich maneuver

(up to 5 times)

1

After 5 abdominal thrusts, opens the victim’s airway using a tongue-jaw lift

and looks for an object in the pharynx; if an object is visible, performs a

finger sweep to remove the object; DOES NOT perform a blind finger sweep

1

Repeats the sequence of attempts (and reattempts) to ventilate, Heimlich

maneuver, and tongue-jaw lift, visualize, and finger sweep if appropriate,

until the obstruction is cleared or advanced procedures are available to

establish a patent airway

1

If the FBAO is removed and the airway is cleared, checks breathing

1

If the victim is not breathing, provides rescue breaths; then checks for signs

of circulation (pulse check and evidence of breathing, coughing, or

movement); if there are no signs of circulation, begins chest compression

1

If the victim is breathing or resumes effective breathing, places victim in

recovery position
