Points

Awarded

Takes or verbalizes body substance isolation precautions

1

Performs a tongue-jaw lift and looks for an object in the pharynx; if an object

is visible, removes it using a finger sweep; DOES NOT perform a blind finger

sweep

1

Opens the airway and attempts to ventilate

1

If unable to make the victim’s chest rise, repositions the victim’s head and

tries to ventilate again

1

If the chest does not rise with attempted breaths, even after repositioning

the airway, straddles the victim’s hips and performs the Heimlich maneuver

(up to 5 times)

1

After 5 abdominal thrusts, opens the victim’s airway using a tongue-jaw lift

and looks for an object in the pharynx; if visible, removes it with a finger sweep

1

Repeats the sequences of attempts (and reattempts) to ventilate, Heimlich

maneuver, and tongue-jaw lift, visualize, and finger sweep, if appropriate,

until the obstruction is cleared or advanced procedures are available to

establish a patent airway

1

If the FBAO is removed and the airway is cleared, checks breathing

1

If the victim is not breathing, provides rescue breaths; then checks for signs

of circulation (pulse check and evidence of breathing, coughing, or

movement); if there are no signs of circulation, begins chest compression

1

If the victim is breathing or resumes effective breathing, places victim in

recovery position
