Afghan Master’s students complete studies here, depart for home

Seven UMass Amherst College of Education Master’s degree students, all of whom are faculty members at universities in Afghanistan, recently completed their degrees after a 2 ½ year program of study in International Education on campus.

Holyoke High School students paint mural depicting perspectives of their city with help of COE Social Justice Education student

The unveiling and dedication of a nine-panel mural depicting the past, present and future of the City of Holyoke, Mass., and painted by five Holyoke High School seniors was publicly unveiled on the side of an historic city theater recently. The students worked with UMass Amherst College of Education graduate student and community arts facilitator, Carla Wojczuk, as part of a Mural Arts Workshop in The CONNECTIONS After School Program at Holyoke High.

Colleen Champ Receives Graduate School’s Boscov Scholarship

Colleen “Birdie” Champ, a doctoral student in the College of Education, was awarded the 2010 Joseph L. Boscov Scholarship by the UMass Amherst Graduate School. The scholarship is awarded annually to a current or incoming female graduate student whose work will “equip her for increased service to the needs of people and/or the environment.”

When teacher Mindy Eichhorn went to India to teach abandoned women life skills, her own life changed.

An Affinity with India

Her interest in India started when she was at the University of Tennessee where she earned a B.S. in Special Education and an M.S. in Education.

“I took a class about women and cross-cultural perspectives and something about India was a magnet. I felt pulled to the women of India,” said Mindy Eichhorn, a COE student currently working on her doctorate in international education. Upon graduation from UTenn, she moved to Hartford and started teaching for Hartford Public Schools in the summer of 2002. But her interest in India never flagged.
