EDUC 695: CURRICULUM, PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT, AND IMPLEMENTATION IN K-12 SCHOOL COUNSELING PROGRAMS

Course Description:

This course will provide students with training in methods and procedures in school counseling program and curriculum development, implementation and evaluation for grade levels K-12. Students will practice their school counseling program development and curriculum implementation in an actual school setting.

Course Goals:

1. To assist teachers, parents, and administrators with student learning.

2. To impart skills and competencies necessary to effectively implement classroom guidance lessons, based on student administered needs assessments.

3. To impart school counselor skills necessary for playing a leadership role in a School Counseling Program Advisory Committee.

Course Objectives:

Students will gain knowledge and understanding of comprehensive developmental guidance programs.

Students will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of how guidance lesson objectives relate to child/adolescent development.

Students will gain knowledge, skills, and experience in formulating counseling program
philosophy and rationale statements.

Students will acquire knowledge and gain experience in making presentations in order to solicit assurances from school committees.

Students will gain knowledge and experience in conducting a counseling program needs assessment.

Students will gain experience in the development, implementation and practice of
classroom guidance lessons that are based on sound developmental theory and principles.

Students will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of how guidance lesson objectives relate to student learning.

Students will apply the principles from Stanley BakerÌs ÍBalanced ApproachÎ to their work in the school setting.

Students will gain knowledge and experience in how to maintain consistency in counseling and guidance activities across grade levels K-12.

Students will establish objectives and systematically evaluate the outcomes of services
provided to students.

Students will utilize language appropriate to the age, stage of development, culture,
linguistic and social background of students and their parents/families.

Students will demonstrate acceptance and respect for individual and group differences with regards to gender, language, race, sexual orientation, religion, socioeconomic background, and values...when interacting with families, school staff, and students.

Course Requirements:

2. Developmental theories and counseling program presentation

3. Advisory committee working groups

write program philosophy and rationale statement
report to school committee
conduct counseling program needs assessment
formulate counseling program goals, objectives, and activities

4. Fomulate introduction letter

5. Guidance curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation.
