About Dr. Sonia Nieto

Sonia Nieto, UMass Amherst School of Education Professor Emerita, is highly regarded as a leader in the field of multicultural and bilingual education. Her numerous awards include the Henry T. Trueba Lifetime Achievement Award, the Distinguished Career Award from the American Educational Research Association’s Committee on Scholars of Color in Education, the American Educational Research Association Division K Legacy Award, and the School of Education Award of Distinction. She holds honorary doctorates from Lesley University, DePaul University, Bridgewater State College, and Manhattanville College. Her publications, including Affirming Diversity: the Sociopolitical Context of Multicultural Education (5th edition, 2008, with co-author Patty Bode), are widely used in teacher preparation and in-service courses throughout the country.

To honor Dr. Nieto’s contributions to the field, the School of Education initiated an effort to raise funds to create the Sonia Nieto Scholarship Fund in Multicultural and Bilingual Education.  Once established, this endowed scholarship will be awarded annually to a graduate student in the Department of Teacher Education and Curriculum Studies who is studying issues in multicultural and bilingual education and who demonstrates a commitment to educational opportunity, especially for those whose academic outcomes have been negatively affected by their life circumstances and school experiences.
