Educator Licensure Programs: STEP MTEL Requirements
Educator licensure in Massachusetts requires that each candidate for Initial
Licensure pass the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL). The MTEL
assess communication and literacy skills and subject matter knowledge appropriate
to the license sought. The Communication and Literacy Skills Test consists
of one four-hour test, divided into two sub-tests (reading and writing skills).
The Subject Matter Tests consist of one four-hour test designed to assess the
candidate's subject matter knowledge in the area of the license sought.
Communication & Literacy Skills Test
- Undergraduate and Post-BA candidates: Must PASS prior
to admission to STEP.
- Graduate candidates: Must PASS by the end of
first semester in STEP.
Subject Matter Test(s)
- All candidates in STEP: Must PASS prior
to practicum (i.e., student teaching)
