Gary Malaney’s primary scholarly interest is critical theory, and he teaches courses on the political, social, and economic causes of oppression and inequality, especially related to higher education. Such courses include Masters Seminar II and Critical Service Learning. As coordinator of the Student Assessment, Research, and Evaluation Office (SAREO), he also is interested in the attitudes, opinions, and behaviors of undergraduate students and in the general area of student affairs administration. He has over 30 years of experience in the field of survey research, has over 60 publications in refereed journals or books, and has given over 90 presentations at professional conferences. He has served on the editorial boards of The Journal of College Student Development and The Journal of Student Affairs Research and Practice, and he is currently serving on the editorial board for The Journal of College and Character. He has been the editor of the Journal of Technology in Student Affairs for the past eight years, and he is a recipient of the NASPA award for Outstanding Contribution to Literature and Research.
