Professional Interests: 

Cristine Smith focuses on literacy and reading for children, youth and adults in developing countries. Having worked as a educational program designer, practitioner, researcher and trainer for almost 20 years before becoming a faculty member at UMass, she has a broad range of interests and areas of expertise, including: girls' and women's education; project management and evaluation; adult learning theory; teacher professional development and training; and early grade reading. She also works in adult literacy and basic education field in the U.S., focusing especially on professional development for adult literacy teachers. She has conducted research, designed and managed programs, and provided technical assistance to educational projects in Nepal, Bangladesh, India, Egypt, Palestine, and Thailand.
