Pat Griffin Honored for LGBT Advocacy

More than 75 alumni, students, and educators gathered in Furcolo Auditorium for a College of Education Homecoming event on Saturday, October 19, with professor emerita Pat Griffin (Ed.D. 1980), a respected educator and nationally recognized advocate for inclusion in sports at all levels, who presented a talk on “The Changing Sports Climate for LGBTQ Athletes & Coaches: Successes & Challenges.”

In his welcoming remarks, Chancellor Kumble Subbaswamy said, “At UMass Amherst, we pride ourselves on being an inclusive campus, committed not only to academic excellence but also to diversity, to access, and to promoting open and informed dialogue about critical issues. Social justice is a value that binds us a community.”

Following the Chancellor’s remarks, the College’s Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Linda Griffin presented Pat Griffin with the College of Education’s Award of Distinction, given on special occasions to faculty, alumni or friends of the College in recognition of their significant contribution to the College of Education, to their field of specialization or to the growth and development of their fellow or current students.
