Chair: Richard Lapan Mission: The Department of Student Development and Pupil Personnel Services (S.D.P.P.S.) focuses on the development of the individual pupil within the context of a variety of formal educational settings (N-16). Research and scholarship arelinked to the study of individual students and their relationships with peers, educators, and families. Study also includes relationships within and among various social groups and their interactions with educational systems, families, and communities. Research and scholarship enable students to participate in the development of innovative program models and in the deeper understanding of individuals and groups in formal educational settings. Academic Programs of Study: Graduate programs of study in the Department
of Student Development and Pupil Personnel Services are designed to promote
research and scholarship which illuminate the relationships among student
learning, student socio-emotional development, and the social context
of educational systems. Doctoral programs of study support the development
of research that is: (1) learner oriented (focusing on cognitive and social
identity development as it relates to classroom interactions, academic
achievement, and inclusive curriculum); (2) school oriented (focusing
on relationships among students' special student needs, learning groups'
social diversity, school's social environment, teachers'/counselors' approaches,
and student's learning and development); and (3) leader oriented (focusing
on the effects of policy and leadership on student learning and development).
The Master's practitioner programs of study are designed to enable the
establishment of new ways of preparing educational professionals and,
thereby, influencing the policies, standards, and practices for the professional
preparation of educators at state and national levels. Doctoral programs of study are offered in the following areas:
