The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and The MIT Press have published Opening Up Education: The Collective Advancement of Education through Open Technology, Open Content, and Open Knowledge, edited by Toru Iyoshi and M.S. Vijay Kumar (Ed.D. 1986.) The book is available for free download from The MIT Press website under a Creative Commons use license and also for sale in hard copy.
In the book’s 30 essays, prominent leaders and thinkers in the open education movement reflect on current and past open education initiatives, offer critical analyses, share the strategic underpinnings of their own work, and delve into open education’s implications in three areas: technology, content, and knowledge. The authors of the essays comprise faculty, researchers, administrators, academic technology experts, foundation program officers and scholars, and directors of major open education projects. They examine what challenges need to be addressed, what potential synergies can be realized, and what opportunities should be seized for a better future for education.
In the book’s forward, John Seely Brown, a visiting scholar and advisor to the provost at the University of Southern California, and independent co-chair of Deloitte’s Center for Edge Innovation, said that the book provides real leverage for open education, and is a major step toward creating a culture of learning for this century.”
Dr. Kumar, a member of the College of Education’s Center for International Education, received his doctorate from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1986. He is currently Senior Associate Dean and Director, Office of Educational Innovation and Technology, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
