Integrated Day Off-Campus
(Master of Education and Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study)
The Integrated Day Off-Campus program leads to a Master of Education degree
or a Certificate of Advanced Graduate
Study (CAGS). While courses are offered through the Division of Continuing
Education, the degree is awarded through the School of Education. Students
should apply directly to the Graduate School and indicate on the application
form their program of choice as Integrated Day Off Campus. Applicants must
complete the regular admissions process.
Upon approval by a faculty advisor and the Graduate Program Director, up
to six graduate credits may be transferred into the program (for Master's
students only) from institutions other than the University of Massachusetts
Amherst provided they are letter graded and have been taken within three
years. In addition, up to six University of Massachusetts Amherst non-degree
graduate credits may be transferred into the program. (A total of 12 graduate
credits may be transferred.) A special transfer form must be completed and
submitted for approval to Professor Masha K. Rudman (School of Education,
Room 224B, Furcolo Hall). CAGS students can transfer up to six graduate credits
taken as a non-degree student from the University of Massachusetts Amherst
only.
The Integrated Day Off-Campus program is an on-site (South Hadley Middle
School) series of graduate courses. A minimum of 33 graduate credits is required
for the Master's degree). Eighteen (18) of these credits must be graded,
at least 12 credits must be at or above the 600 level, and a minimum of 21
credits must be taken in the School of Education. The C.A.G.S. is awarded
upon completion of a 30-credit-hour program of study beyond the Master's
degree. All 30 credits must be taken at the University within a four-year
period, and at least 15 credits must be taken in the School of Education.
At least one course is offered each semester (although typically, four or
five courses are offered). The program is individually tailored, and all
courses are designed to foster inservice teachers' professional development.
Courses may include portfolio assessment, brain-based learning, multicultural
children's literature, education through movement, mentoring, integrating
art through the curriculum, multicultural curriculum and art, cooperative
learning, help for struggling readers, a number of hands-on art courses,
storytelling, and a variety of independent studies.
This off-campus program has special rules that must be followed: Participants
must take at least one course per semester off campus (on site). They are
permitted to take one course on campus in addition to the on-site courses.
The cost of an on-campus course is the established University cost per credit
hour. The off-campus program cost is approximately half the on-campus cost
since participants do not pay fees beyond the registration fee. Course waivers
for supervising student teachers are not accepted in the off-campus program.
Program participants are counseled by Professor Masha K. Rudman via e-mail
and telephone, and scheduled office visits. A letter is sent to each participant
before the beginning of each semester (including the summer) detailing the
course offerings and giving current information about tuition and fees. These
are subject to change from semester to semester. Regular informative messages
are sent by e-mail. All students are placed on a distribution list via e-mail.
Each participant must complete the required School of Education forms for
the completion of the Master of Education (M.Ed.) and Certificate
of Advanced Graduate Study (C.A.G.S.).
Advantages of the Integrated Day Off-Campus Program: On-site location (South
Hadley Middle School) for classes; excellent instructors; interesting courses
applicable to K-12 classrooms; courses aimed at inservice teachers; low cost.
