Special Education
Special Education prepares highly qualified teachers, administrators, policy
makers, and researchers to provide leadership roles in a wide range of settings
at many levels; school, district, state, and federal. Our students acquire
skills and knowledge about evidence-based practices that enhance academic
and social integration of students with disabilities.
The Special Education Concentration offers a Master of Education (M.Ed.),
a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study (CAGS), and a Doctorate
in Education (Ed.D.) through the School of Education. An undergraduate
degree in Special Education is not offered.
Highlights
The Special Education Concentration is home to two nationally recognized
special education publications, The Journal of Special Education Leadership and Teaching
Exceptional Children. The Special Education Concentration is a member
of the Higher Education Consortium on Special Education, a professional organization
representing doctoral programs in special education. The Special Education
Concentration has also been the recipient of over the past five years of
$1.5 million in U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education
Program federal grants in addition to other external and internal funding
to support faculty and student research.
Required Courses
The Special Education programs of study are
based on a scope and sequence of instruction that leads to Massachusetts
Initial Licensure Certification as a Teacher of Students with moderate
disabilities (Pre K-8, 5-12) or as a Special Administrator (All). Each
of these licenses is accredited through the National Council of Accreditation
of Teacher Education and the Council of Exceptional Children. The competencies
meeting these licenses are embedded throughout the coursework, pre-practica,
and practica experiences.
Careers in Special Education
Our graduates have gone on to successful
careers in the field of special education. Many have careers
as teachers of special education, department chairs, supervisors,
and directors of special education in the public and private
schools. Some
are employed by state agencies as project managers and directors
and at colleges and universities as faculty and disability services directors.
