CTEP
CTEP seeks candidates who demonstrate initiative, highly effective interpersonal
and communication skills, a passion for learning, and respect for the diversity
of children and families in public schools. Experience with children in educational
environments and a strong academic record are valued. Students must be able
to balance intensive course work with full-day internships in public schools.
CTEP encourages individuals with a range of experiences and backgrounds to
apply.
Who May Apply
CTEP is designed to meet the needs of three groups of individuals who
desire an early childhood or elementary Initial License:
- Graduating seniors at the University of Massachusetts
- Seniors from other institutions
- Mid-career individuals
Applicants must possess a B.A. or B.S. degree in a liberal arts or a math/
science major. Many applicants have a minor in education; however, this
is not a requirement for admission.
Requirements
Prerequisites for acceptance:
- Passing scores on the Communication and Literacy Skills portion of the
Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL)
- Evidence of, or plans for, meeting the prerequisite knowledge base in reading/writing
methods. This prerequisite can be met by successful completion of a reading/writing
methods course that addresses the state competencies OR evidence of
a passing score on the Foundations of Reading portion of the MTEL. Educ
461, which satisfies this prerequisite, will be offered through UMass in
summer 2006. Candidates taking a Literacy course at another institution
must provide a syllabus.
- Minimum undergraduate G.P.A. of 2.75. (The average undergraduate G.P.A.
of current CTEP students was 3.4.) If your GPA is lower than 2.75, please
include a letter of explanation.
Include the following with your application:
- Completed University of Massachusetts Graduate School Application (IMPORTANT: For
PROGRAM (Part II), write Education. For Sub-field, write CTEP. Then,
in parenthesis, write either Early Childhood OR Elementary (your
preference) followed by a dash and TECS Department. CTEP does
not require GRE scores (Part IV).
- Personal Statement that includes your future goals as well as your beliefs
about teaching and learning
- Hard copy of your passing scores on the Communication and Literacy Skills
portion of the MTEL
- Two letters of reference (one academic reference and one highlighting your
work with children)
- Evidence of, or plan for, meeting the reading/writing methods prerequisite,
- Resume.
