180 Days in Springfield Project (Master of Education)
The 180 Days in Springfield Project is a site-based, collaborative teacher
education program between the Springfield Public Schools and the University
of Massachusetts Amherst. It provides a year-long educational experience for
new teachers in a diverse, urban school environment. The program is for graduating
college seniors and college graduates holding baccalaureate degrees in mathematics,
chemistry, biology, earth science, general science, physics, history, political
science/political philosophy, or English.
The program features a year of teaching in an urban middle or high school
along with courses leading to a Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree and Massachusetts
Initial Licensure (reciprocal in 44 states). The program starts in August and
continues into the following summer.
The 180 Days in Springfield Project is part of the United States Department
of Education Title II-funded Massachusetts Coalition for Improving Urban Teacher
Quality and Student Performance. Its partnership with the Chestnut Accelerated
Middle School is part of the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher
Education (NCATE)'s Professional Development School Standards Project. The
180 Days in Springfield Project is also partnered with Central High School,
Springfield.
