National Organizations

The following is a list of organizations whose activities have a national scope. Please contact us if you would like your organization listed on this page or if you have any suggestions for additional links.

 

American Planning Association

The American Planning Association has contracted with the U.S. Department of Energy to prepare a Scoping Report and related products that would establish the feasibility, form, and content of a self-directed diagnostic workbook about sustainable development.

American Forests

American Forest's mission involves helping people improve the environment with trees and forests.

American Rivers

American Rivers is a national conservation organization dedicated to protecting and restoring America's river systems and to fostering a river stewardship ethic.

Association of American Geographers

AAG is a scientific and educational society whose members show interest in theory, methods, and practice of geography.

Association of State Floodplain Managers

An organization of professionals involved in floodplain management, flood hazard mitigation, the National Flood Insurance Program, and flood preparedness, warning and recovery.

Association of State Wetlands Managers

A nonprofit organization dedicated to the protection and restoration of our nation's wetlands.

Brookings Institute

An independent, nonpartisan organization devoted to research, analysis, and public education with an emphasis on economics, foreign policy, governance, and metropolitan policy.

Congress of New Urbanism

Founded by a group of architects, this organization works to create buildings, neighborhoods, and regions that provide a high quality of life for all residents, while protecting the natural environment.

Conservation Fund

The Conservation Fund seeks sustainable conservation solutions for the 21st century, emphasizing the integration of economic and environmental goals.

Earth Conservation Corps

A nonprofit organization dedicated to restoring and protecting our natural environment and improving the lives of disadvantaged young people.

Environmental Law Institute

Has played a pivotal role in shaping the fields of environmental law, policy, and management, domestically and abroad.

Forest Service's Urban and Community Forestry Program

The program helps State forestry agencies, local and tribal governments, and the private sector improve natural resource management of trees and forests in urban areas and community settings.

Friends of the Earth

Since its inception, Friends of the Earth has served as a steward of the basics: clean water, breathable air, healthy communities.

Gaia Trust

A charitable association which supports transition to a sustainable and more spiritual future society, through grants and proactive initiatives.

Global Ecovillage Network

A global confederation of people and communities dedicated to restoring the land and living "sustainable plus" lives, by putting more back into the environment than is taken out.

Land Trust Alliance

The Land Trust Alliance promotes voluntary land conservation and strengthens the land trust movement by providing the leadership, information, skills and resources land trusts need to conserve land for the benefit of communities and natural systems.

National Audubon Society

The mission of the National Audubon Society is to conserve and restore natural ecosystems, focusing on birds and other wildlife for the benefit of humanity and the earth's biological diversity.

National Trust for Historic Preservation

The National Trust for Historic Preservation, chartered by Congress in 1949, is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting the irreplaceable. It fights to save historic buildings and the neighborhoods and landscapes they anchor.

National Recreation and Park Association

The mission of the National Recreation and Park Association is to advance parks, recreation and environmental conservation efforts that enhance the quality of life for all people.

National Wildlife Federation

The National Wildlife Federation is the nation's largest member-supported conservation group, uniting individuals, organizations, businesses and government to protect wildlife, wild places, and the environment.

Nature Conservancy

The mission of The Nature Conservancy is to preserve plants, animals and natural communities that represent the diversity of life on Earth by protecting the lands and waters they need to survive.

Resources for the Future

Resources for the future improves environmental and natural resource policymaking worldwide through objective social science research.

Sierra Club

A well-established and prominent grassroots environmental advocacy organization.

Smart Growth America

A coalition of advocacy organizations working to support citizen-driven planning that coordinates development, transportation, revitalization of older areas, and preservation of open space and the environment.

Trust for Public Land

Founded in 1972, the Trust for Public Land is the only national nonprofit working exclusively to protect land for human enjoyment and well-being.

United States Green Buildings Council

The Council is the nation's foremost coalition of leaders from across the building industry that works to promote buildings that are environmentally responsible, profitable, and healthy places to live and work.

Wildlife Conservation Society

Combine the resources of wildlife parks in New York with field projects around the globe to inspire care for nature, provide leadership in environmental education, and help sustain our planet's biological diversity.

Worldwatch Institute

The Worldwatch Institute is dedicated to fostering the evolution of an environmentally sustainable society--one in which human needs are met in ways that do not threaten the health of the natural environment or the prospects of future generations.
