Disability Services at UMass Amherst

Resources For Faculty and Instructors

Disability Services is committed to making reasonable, effective and appropriate accommodations to meet the needs of students with disabilities and help create a barrier free campus. Faculty members are poised to play a critical role in assisting in the removal of barriers for students with disabilities, and are often called upon to provide assistance. Each student who is eligible for an ADA accommodation and is registered with Disability Services may request academic adjustments. Accommodations are determined by consultation between students and their Consumer Managers on an individual basis

How to Access Student Accommodations on Clockwork

Faculty members can access notification of a student's accommodation by logging onto Clockwork with their net id and password. After logging in, faculty will be able to view each course they are currently teaching where a student has been deemed eligible for accommodations. Eligible students names will be identified and their accommodations are available for your information by clicking on the student's name.

Tips For Working With Students Who Have Disabilities

Invite students to introduce themselves to you and get to know them.

If you have a question about reasonable accommodations or are concerned about a particular student you can contact the student's Consumer Manager. We will not disclose a student's disability, but we can offer support and advise regarding specific accomodations. Don’t wait until a small problem becomes a big one.

Find out about the many resources available both on campus and in the community which are available to students with disabilities.

If a student feels comfortable in sharing their disability with you, take this opportunity to learn about the student and his or her disability.

Clarity in communication is important.

Be open-minded to accommodations recommended by Disability Services and be willing to offer options that you may feel will better allow the student to comprehend your course material.

Be an advocate.
