Dietetic Internship
Admission Requirements
Admission to the Internship is competitive among applicants, and decided by the Internship Selection committee. The committee consists of six-seven members of the program's advisory committee, including the Internship Director, University Nutrition Department faculty, and internship preceptors. To enroll in the Internship, students must have earned a bachelor's degree from any U.S. regionally accredited college or university (or a foreign degree, if verified as equivalent), and have completed an ADA-approved or -accredited Didactic Program in Dietetics.
A recent (within the last three years) full-semester course in diet therapy, nutrition in disease, or medical nutrition therapy is required. If you have questions about this requirement, contact the Program Director.
A cumulative grade point average of 2.75 or above (on a 4.0 scale) for college work is expected. GPA of nutrition and science courses, difficulty of particular courses taken, and student's course load throughout college is also considered. Work experience, letters of recommendation, and letter of application are all-important components of the evaluation process.
All interns are enrolled in NUTR 698, Nutrition Practicum, and receive six graduate credits per semester (total 12 credits), graded pass/fail, for work done during their internship rotations. ACCEPTANCE INTO THE DIETETIC INTERNSHIP DOES NOT GUARANTEE ACCEPTANCE INTO A GRADUATE DEGREE PROGRAM, OR VICE VERSA.
Students accepted into the Internship occasionally work concurrently toward a master's degree. However, the two programs on this campus are administered separately, and students are usually advised to enroll in them in succession, rather than concurrently. A maximum of six credits (from the Internship or elsewhere) can be transferred into a master’s degree program if a student is not already matriculated. Those students who intend to pursue a graduate degree at the University of Massachusetts Amherst must apply directly to the Graduate School. Admission information is available from the University's Graduate School Admissions Office, 530 Goodell, Univ. of Mass., Amherst, MA 01003-3290; phone (413) 545-0721. Students must realize the time commitments for the Internship are great enough to preclude taking more than one or two courses per semester during the internship year, and that actual schedules of internship rotations and courses may dictate taking courses out of normal sequence for a graduate degree.
Completed internship applications and supporting documents must be postmarked by February 15, 2008 for August 2008 admission. All material should be submitted in a single packet. We understand that some schools require sending transcripts or letters of recommendation directly, which is acceptable.
All applicants to this Dietetic Internship must participate in computer matching. Applicants should request instructions and a mark/sense card to prioritize their DI or AP4 preferences from any ADA-approved or -accredited Didactic Program in Dietetics or from D&D Digital Systems. This request should be made to allow turn around time for submitting by a February 15, 2008 postmark deadline. There is no charge for this material. However, there is a $50.00 charge for computer matching that is due with the applicant's prioritized ranking.
