Frequently Asked Questions

Why was my family contacted for a study?
You are being contacted at this time because a child in your family is the right age for the particular activity that is being explored. If you do not wish to be contacted about participating in studies again, please let us know and we will remove your family from our database.

What will my child do in the study?
Our activites are designed to be fun and interesting for children. A researcher will discuss everything that your child will do during the study before the experiment begins. Participation is voluntary, and you may stop the experiment at any time.

What equipment is used in the study?
If your child is participating in a motion capture study, s/he will wear velcro wristbands on each hand. Each wristband contains 2 - 4 infrared markers. The markers give off infrared light that can only be seen by our special camera. These markers help us to track the motor movements of your child. There is no discomfort or pain associated with wearing the markers.

Will I stay with my child during the experiment?
In every study the parent remains with their child.

Can I bring my other children?
We are happy to provide a sitter for siblings in our special playroom with advance notice.

How long will the study take?
Appointments vary by study, but typically last 30 - 60 minutes.

Will I receive compensation for participating in a study?
We are very grateful to each family that participates. Your child may receive a certificate and a token gift for being in a study.

Where did you get my name?
We obtained the names of children who might participate from various sources. These include public birth records and names volunteered by your friends and neighbors whose own children have participated in our projects.

We are always happy to answer any additional questions that you may have. Please contact Dr. Berthier at 413-545-0535 or berthier[at]psych.umass.edu
