Eva, a young girl, still very carefree and playfully superficial, is wooed by two brothers. One of them, Klaus, is a smooth talking taxi driver in West Berlin and who is never short of cash. Ulli, the younger brother, is somewhat reserved and, at first sight, not as attractive as Klaus. Eva becomes enthralled with Klaus and they become lovers. But when she becomes pregnant with his child, he refuses to face up to the responsibility. On August 13, 1961 Klaus suddenly loses his source of income in West Berlin - the Berlin Wall now separates him from his work. Ironically, Ulli stands at the border with a weapon in his hand working as a border guard. In this precarious political situation, Eva reflects on her feelings. She discovers that there is no real love between her and Klaus. Instead, she feels increasingly attracted to Ulli. In an attempt to flee East Berlin, Klaus is arrested and sent to prison. Ulli responds to this and to Eva, who makes no secret of her feelings for him.
