Synopsis:

This movie spans ten years of the life of Friedrich Hölderin, from 1796 to 1806. The smart young poet enters the house of Frankfurt's banker, Gontard, to make ends meet as a private tutor. There he teaches four children, and falls in love with Gontard's wife Susette, who returns his affections. However, it's a hopeless love that lasts only a short while. Gontard throws Hölderin out of the house, and after this forced break up, both Friedrich and Susette have broken spirits. Susette denies herself her life, becomes sick, and dies in 1802 at the age of 33. In 1806, Friedrich Hölderin is admitted to a mental hospital in Tübingen.
