Synopsis:

Part 1: The critical days of October 1989 - The 40th anniversary of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) and the consequences. October 7, 1989: The GDR is 40 years old; protests at Berlin's Alexanderplatz against rigged elections; violent repression of all demonstrators. October 9, 1989: The GDR media took on a new political emphasis; the largest protest in Leipzig since June 17, 1953; 70,000 people chant "We are the people!" October 11, 1989: The newspaper Der Morgen publishes Prof. Wekwerth’s attack on media policy. October 13, 1989: Party leaders show no courage during the meeting with Erich Honecker; almost all demonstrators who were arrested on October 7 are set free.  October 18, 1989: Erich Honecker resigns; Egon Krenz becomes the new General Secretary; the TV-news program "Aktuelle Kamera" changes its format to reflect the current events. October 29, 1989: "Open doors, open words." Top political leaders congregate in Berlin; SPD politicians Walter Momper and Horst Ehmke meet with the New Forum party. Honored with the top German TV award, the Adolf Grimme Prize in Gold, 1995.
