Following approval of a ballot measure by state voters, adults 21 years of age and older in Massachusetts can now legally possess and use small amounts of marijuana. However, some restrictions remain in place. Federal laws continue to prohibit the use, possession and/or cultivation of marijuana on the property of educational institutions, including UMass Amherst.
Before you consider using recreational marijuana in Massachusetts, it is important to know and understand the facts and policies about its use. Just like with alcohol and other drugs, there are existing laws. The university also has a policy regarding the use of marijuana. Violations are subject to sanctions according to the Code of Student Conduct.
