Withdrawing During a Semester
If you plan to withdraw from the University between the first day of classes and the last day of finals (ie. you will not be receiving final grades for all of the courses you enrolled in) you must complete a Withdrawal From the University Form.
Please note there are five types of Mid-Semester University Withdrawals: Personal, Health, Academic, Financial and Military/Active Duty.
Once you are withdrawn from the University (regardless of the type of withdrawal) you must apply for readmission to the University. Click here for deadlines and specific details.
Withdrawing at the End of a Semester
If you are withdrawing from the University AFTER the current semester ends, but before the first day of classes for the following semester, complete an End of Semester Withdrawal Card and return it to the Undergraduate Registrar’s Office:
213 Whitmore Administration Building
University of Massachusetts
181 Presidents Drive
Amherst, MA 01033
Withdrawing from a Course
If you are withdrawing from a single course, it is important to be aware of the Academic Calendar (http://www.umass.edu/registrar/calendars/academic-calendar)
The last day to complete a “No Record Drop,” is the last day of the add/drop period . Simply go into your SPIRE account and drop the course.
The “Mid-Semester Date” is the last opportunity to drop a course with a “W” on your record. You can pick up the course withdrawal form at the Undergraduate Registrar’s Office (213 Whitmore)
After the “Mid-Semester Date” your only option is to petition your Academic Dean (of your primary major) for a Late Course Withdrawal. In order to withdraw, you will have to prove extenuating circumstances and provide documentation. There is no guarantee your late petition will be granted. Therefore, it is better to withdraw by the “Mid-Semester Date.”
Readmission to the University
All students planning to return to the university after withdrawal must file a Readmission Application with the Office of the Registrar. Be sure to check the application date for on time course registration.
For more information about the readmission please contact the Registrar’s Office at 413-545-0555.
