The Dance Major Program at the University seeks to prepare students in
both the technical and theoretical aspects of dance. The Dance Program
offers BFA and BA degree tracks, and places equal emphasis on the idioms
of ballet, modern dance, and jazz. While it is not necessary to have been
trained in all three idioms, the majority of students accepted into the
program have studied at least one idiom for an average of ten years and
have reached an advanced skill level. They also have a solid background
in ballet, even if it is not their strongest idiom.
The Sankofa Project (link to website) celebrates African Roots in American Dance through intensive summer study and choreographic residencies at UMass Amherst accompanied by performances and events celebrating, through dance, the diversity of the world in which we live.
An
audition is required for acceptance of a student as a dance major. Auditions
are held on campus throughout the Fall and Spring at regularly scheduled
times. Auditions are taught in the form of a class based on the idioms
of ballet, jazz, and modern dance. In addition, dancers will be asked
to present a one-minute solo in any idiom. This excerpt should demonstrate
performance ability, and should not exceed the one minute time limit.
Prospective students must submit a completed Dance Audition & Profile form (Microsoft Word file or Acrobat Reader pdf file) to the Dance Office and will then be notified of the date and
time of the scheduled audition. (Click on your preferred format to view and print
out; then click on "Back" to return to this page.) Audition requests are
processed by the Dance Office only after an application has been made
to the University. For additional information, or to receive forms by mail, please contact the Dance
Office at 413-545-2413 or 545-6064 or e-mail mllauren@dance.umass.edu.
