Experience

Education

Book Publishing

A.B., English, magna cum laude, Cornell University

M.F.A., Creative Writing, Louisiana State University

More than a dozen years experience in academic book publishing and as an independent consultant.

Summary

I draw on my experience as an acquisitions editor at Cornell University Press to advise authors as they develop their book proposals, draft and polish their manuscripts, research and select potential publishers, and navigate the submission and peer review process. My clients have published their books with Brookings, Cambridge, Oxford, MIT, Rutgers, and other fine academic presses.

Areas of specific interest and expertise

I specialize in the humanities, social sciences, and public health.

Editing Services Services offered

Book coaching, developmental editing, and copyediting. See www.the-book-coach.com/services.html for details.

  Process

During a complimentary initial phone consultation, I discuss the status of the project and how I can help the author reach his or her goals. If the project is in the early stages, I lay out several options for completing a book proposal and a first draft. If the author already has a full draft, I usually suggest a two-step process: 1) an overall evaluation of the manuscript; 2) developmental editing and/or copyediting.I use Track Changes to make my recommendations, and I often work with authors through several rounds of revision.

  Rates

A 30- to 60-minute phone consultation is complimentary. I charge a flat fee (generally $750) for a manuscript evaluation and then provide a custom project rate for all subsequent work.
