Student Government

The Student Government Association (SGA) is the voice of students at UMass Amherst. It consists of an executive branch, a legislative branch of 60 senators, and a student judiciary, and has a significant influence on most areas of student life. Working with the SGA will help you build essential life and career skills, including communication, leadership, organizing, and networking.

You may also choose to get involved in student government on a more local level - through your residence hall’s House Council or through the Area Government. House Councils are the equivalent of the local or town government of the SGA. They organize educational and social programming for their building or cluster in conjunction with the Resident Assistants and the Area Government. Area Governments are responsible for entire residential areas (e.g. Southwest or Orchard Hill), dealing with area-wide issues and programming.

Even if you’re not interested in participating in student government, the SGA is accessible to students who want to know what’s going on, what the leadership is up to, or who need help finding their way around life at UMass Amherst.

Looking for another political outlet?

There are many student groups outside of the SGA dedicated to political activism, such as the University Democrats, the Campus Greens, and the Republican Club (see Student Organizations for more).

Students whose activism is less partisan can get involved with the Center for Educational Policy Advocacy (CEPA) an agency of the SGA that researches and advocates on behalf of UMass Amherst undergraduates.
