The award ceremony will be held on Monday, May 4, 2009.
The Center for Student Development wants to honor the hard work, community service and dedication that our students and RSOs put forth each year. Therefore, we created the Sammies! These awards honor you and all that you do for your group, community and the university. Check out the awards and be sure to apply or nominate someone you think is deserving of recognition.

Nomination deadline for all awards is March 6, 2009.

Bernie Dallas Memorial Scholarship Award
This award was established in 2007 to recognize a sophomore, junior or senior who is active in an RSO, the Student Government Association, the Student Businesses and/or Community Service Learning who exemplifies the highest leadership qualities and ideals and who demonstrates a commitment to the University of Massachusetts Amherst and its community. This award honors Bernie Dallas, a member of the Class of 1966.
Two awards are given out each year.

Eunice R. Konieczny Student Leadership Award
This award was established in 1985 to recognize a graduating senior who is an RSO, SGA, or Student Businesses Officer who exemplifies the highest leadership and public service ideals to the university community and who demonstrate a commitment to the Student Activities Trust Fund (SATF). This award honors Eunice R. Konieczny who provided over twenty years of dedicated service to the Student Government Association.

Outstanding RSO Officer of the Year Award
This award honors the most organized, dedicated, and efficient RSO officer who is also involved in their organization and other areas on campus.

Outstanding RSO Member of the Year Award
This award will be given to one RSO member that has done an exceptional job in their service to the RSO during the school year in assisting the group in carrying out their mission, being active in the UMass Amherst community, keeping group morale high, and serving as a leader to other group members.

Outstanding Community Service of the Year Award
by an Individual
This award honors the individual student who si committed to excellence in community service at UMass Amherst and/or the surrounding communities. This individual has made community service a regular part of their life and understands the importance of service to others.

UMass Amherst Most Spirited Student of the Year Award
This award honors the student who truly exemplifies, supports, and promotes the spirit and passion of UMass Amherst. The student is proud to be a part of UMass Amherst and demonstrates this through their actions and school spirit.

Outstanding New RSO of the Year Award
This award will be given to one first year RSO that has succeeded in setting a solid foundation for its organization and its members and running in a manner that will sustain itself for years to come. The group will have increased its membership, delegated responsibilities throughout the organization, experienced some leadership training, completed all requirements of the CSD and SGA, and mastered the university system in accomplishing their mission. The award also recognizes that the RSO brings something unique to UMass Amherst.

Outstanding RSO of the Year Award
This award is given to the RSO that has fulfilled its mission and the mission of the University of Massachusetts Amherst by participating in continual community service, advocating and promoting campus and community leadership, showing efficiency in event planning (where applicable), being a service to their student constituents and overall excellence during the past school year.

Outstanding Community Service of the Year Award
by an Organization
This award honors the RSO who has committed itself to excellence in community service in the UMass Amherst community and/or the surrounding communities.

Most Improved RSO of the Year Award
This award is given to the RSO that has shown the most improvement from the previous year in terms of group dynamics, membership growth, member development, community development (within the group), community service (outside the group), adherence to university/CSD policies and procedures, and/or in event planning and execution from the previous year. Indicators may include but are not limited to a more transparent structure to the group; a rise in membership due to increased recruitment and retention initiatives; a more cohesive and engaged group; giving to the university and community through group projects; improved record keeping or response to requests from the CSD; and attendance at leadership trainings or conferences.

UMass Amherst RSO Spirit of the Year Award
This award honors the RSO that truly exemplifies, supports, and promotes the mission of UMass Amherst. The RSO is proud to be a part of UMass Amherst and demonstrates this through their actions and school spirit.

Outstanding Sorority of the Year Award
This award is to recognize the Greek Letter Sorority that has achieved a level of excellence in upholding the mission of their organization throughout the school year. Evaluated material will be community service and philanthropic efforts, recruitment and retention of members, scholastic achievement, and being active in the UMass Amherst community.

Outstanding Fraternity of the Year Award
This award is to recognize the Greek Letter Fraternity that has achieved a level of excellence in upholding the mission of their organization throughout the school year. Evaluated criteria will be community service and philanthropic efforts, recruitment and retention of members, being active in the UMass Amherst community, and scholastic achievement.

Outstanding Student Business of the Year Award
This award is presented to the student business that has done an outstanding job over the past year providing quality service and products to the students and community of UMass Amherst. This includes convenient and premium service, completing paperwork in a timely manner, letting the public know about their services, and meeting the needs of their constituents.

Outstanding RSO Philanthropic Event of the Year Award
This award is given to the RSO or team of RSOs that initiated and implemented an exceptional philanthropic event that benefited the UMass Amherst campus, a recognized charity and/or the surrounding community.

Outstanding RSO Social Event of the Year Award
This award is given to the RSO or team of RSOs that initiated and implemented an exceptional event that benefited the UMass Amherst campus or the surrounding community.

Outstanding Sports Club of the Year Award
This award will be given to the UMass Amherst Sports Club that has shown superior sportsmanship and success in competition over the past year. This award is designed to reward Sports Clubs for having properly prepared their paperwork (including fiscal responsibilities) participated in tournaments, hosted tournaments on campus, and achieved success in sporting events.
