Late Water Considerations for 2003

Our experience tells us that, in general, this season is likely to be a POOR year to hold late water floods. The following are negative indicators this year:

bullet icon the drought stress from 2002
bullet icon the very cold winter of 2002-03
bullet icon extended snow and/or sand cover during the winter
bullet icon presence of off-color vines in spring 03
bullet icon signs of winter injury in spring 03

If you have several of these negative indicators, late water is probably not a good choice this year. However, organic growers may still want to consider late water for pest management reasons. In addition, your experience on your own bogs may indicate that you can still have a good outcome despite these negative indicators.
