Welcome to the UMass Cranberry Station

The UMass Cranberry Station, a research and extension center of UMass-Amherst, is located in the heart of the cranberry growing region. Our facilities include an 11-acre research cranberry bog, greenhouse, and laboratories. The Cranberry Station personnel includes specialists in Plant Pathology, Entomology, Environmental Physiology, Plant Nutrition/Cultural Practices, Weed Science/Integrated Pest Management, and Floriculture. In addition, we are often joined by visiting scientists, graduate students, and undergraduate summer assistants from area colleges and universities. The Station ranks as a leader in the United States and worldwide for research and outreach programs on cranberry culture.

Mission statement: The mission of the UMass Cranberry Station is to maintain and enhance the economic viability of the Massachusetts cranberry industry through research and extension and to serve the public welfare by supporting economic development and protection of the environment.

05/12/08 Kerb Update: EPA has denied our application to use Kerb for 2008. It is unlikely that we will receive additional section 18s for Kerb in the future. Management options are discussed in the May Newsletter. If you have gotten some control with Casoron applications in the past and and would normally apply Casoron in May, you should seriously consider applying Casoron at your earliest opportunity, depending on when you have applied it in the past.

If you have extra Kerb in your storage units, DO NOT USE IT at this time. It is ILLEGAL to apply Kerb to cranberries. You can bring unopened cases back to your point of purchase; please bring a receipt if possible. Opened cases can be taken to agricultural waste collection sites (at no cost to you!). See May newsletter.

Short (24-48 hr) floods
in mid-May have also given suppression of dodder germination in some situations. These often timed to coincide with BHF floods.
