preliminary planning principles
The primary catchment area for student enrollment is the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, then the New England region, then nationally and internationally. Currently, 81% of UMass students come from Massachusetts and about 7% come from New England. With so many students' homes within a few hours drive of Amherst, many tend to return home on a regular basis. This pattern of activity likely exaggerates students' desire to bring cars to campus. As part of the university‘s sustainability mission, alternatives to personal automobiles should be pursued including rail access and ride share programs.
