* Why am I here? Do I use my time wisely?

This workshop helps you specify your goals, set priorities, and follow through. We will discuss developing the habit of motivation, acknowledging your intentions and commitments, characteristics of a master student, techniques for becoming an effective time manager, and having fun while accomplishing your most important goals.

* How do I take notes? How do I listen?

We consider specific ideas, tools, and strategies to help you improve your ability to understand, organize, and retain information from lectures, discussions, and textbooks. We will discuss how to develop the habits of attention, mindfulness, and concentration; reduce self-criticism and negative thought patterns; the key elements of effective note-taking (observing, recording, and reviewing); and two systems for organizing your notes.

* How can I improve my reading capabilities? (Sections I & II)

Two sessions focus on becoming a more comfortable, confident, and effective reader. We will explore a variety of specific strategies for increasing involvement, comprehension, and retention when reading. You will have opportunities to practice skimming, scanning, and reflecting as well as concept and information mapping.

* How do I improve my memory?

Twenty-five specific techniques will help you remember course content as well as other important information. Tools to help you improve performance on exams are included. Topics of discussion include developing strategies for active and organized learning, remembering names, mnemonic devices, effective review skills, coping with the testing situation, and special tools for math and science tests.

* Do I know how to relax?

Several effective ways of handling stressful situations make up this workshop, including an opportunity to practice specific relaxation techniques during the session. Topics to be discussed include taking care of yourself (diet, exercise and rest), getting support from others, being creative in finding ways to enjoy yourself, and the importance of quiet time in daily life.

* How do I choose a major? Career success

This lively workshop features a simulation exercise and discussion of your career interests. You will also have the opportunity to explore possible majors in this workshop. Topics for you to consider include the process of career decision making, planning your future, employment trends in the next decade, resources for information on specific occupations, and strategies for coping with the rapidly changing demands of the economy.
