Skills Workshops (pre-registration needed)

STRESS GPS– GAINING PRACTICAL SKILLS

Mondays through Fridays, September 25 – December 15
3 – 4 p.m. in New Africa House 415

Innovative skills-based free workshops open to all UMass students, focused on learning practical tools for coping with college stress and anxiety.  Increase your emotional well-being by practicing strategies to calm your mind and body, increase your mindfulness, and manage emotional distress. Six session series run every day and students can join any time.

MINDFULNESS AND MEDITATION FOR ANXIETY

Mondays, October 16, 23, 30
4 – 5:30 p.m. in New Africa House

Three session free workshop open to all students. Learn mindfulness and meditation practices to reduce stress and anxiety. Mindfulness meditation has been shown to increase a sense of well-being, increase focus and concentration, and decrease anxiety. Learn and practice effective strategies that you can incorporate into your everyday life.

MINDFULNESS, MEDITATION AND SELF-COMPASSION

4 – 5:30 p.m. in New Africa House

Three session free workshop open to all students. Learn how mindfulness meditation can help you cultivate greater self-acceptance and self-compassion. By being a compassionate observer of your own experiences, thoughts and feelings, you can increase resilience and find greater peace in your life.

THERAPIST ASSISTED ONLINE (TAO)

Seven week interaction web-based program that helps you overcome anxiety and depression. Each week, you will watch videos, complete exercises, and meet with a counselor via private, secure, videoconferencing for a 10-15 minute consultation. Daily homework can be completed on smart phone, tablet, or computer.

STRESS MANAGEMENT FOR RESIDENT ADVISORS AND PEER MENTORS

Two-session workshops

Session 1: October 12 and October 19, 4 – 5 p.m.
Session 2: November 7 and November 14, 4 – 5 p.m.
Session 3: November 29 and December 6, noon – 1 p.m
Held in New Africa House

Learn stress management strategies geared to the needs and demands of RA’s and PM’s. Get support to prevent occupational burn-out and compassion fatigue. For each two-session workshop, attend both sessions for maximum benefit.

ADHD/ADD SUPPORT GROUP

Mondays 4 – 5:30 p.m. in Bartlett Hall

Support group for graduate and undergraduate students affected by symptoms related to ADD/ADHD or other attention difficulties.  Improve time management and organization, reduce procrastination, increase concentration, self-esteem and self-acceptance.

NEW STUDENT SUPPORT GROUP

Wednesdays 3:30 – 5 p.m. in New Africa House

Support group for new undergraduate students, open to first year or transfer students. Feeling disconnected or alone? Homesick? Stressed about your living situation? Worried about academics? Meet other new students, share experiences and resources, and get support on how to navigate your lives and increase your chances of success at UMass.

MAKING CONNECTIONS

Ongoing group for undergraduate students. Build connections in a supportive and safe environment while exploring issues including self-esteem, relationships, anxiety and school adjustment.

GRIEF AND LOSS SUPPORT

Wednesdays 3 – 4:30 p.m. in Bartlett Hall

Support group for undergraduate and graduate students who have experienced the loss of someone close to them. In a supportive environment, members will have the opportunity to share their experiences and feelings. Exploration of coping skills and mutual sharing will be encouraged.

Experiential personal growth group with a focus on self-exploration, self-expression, interpersonal relationships, managing anxiety, balancing multiple roles, and addressing obstacles to completing dissertations/theses.

LGBTQIA COMMUNITY SUPPORT AND DISCUSSION GROUP

Wednesdays 6:30 – 8:15 p.m. 102 Wilder, Center for Multicultural Advancement and Student Success (CMASS)

The UMass Stonewall Center, in partnership with the CCPH, is hosting a weekly drop-in group for students who want to talk about their experiences as LGBTQIA UMass students. Co-led by Lydia Rackenberg, LICSW and Hillary Montague-Asp.

CONNECTIONS IN COLOR: A Group Where Students of Color Can Find Their UMass Voice

Supportive space for students of color to come together, talk and learn while engaging in discussions regarding the academic and social pressures of being a student at UMass. Discussions will focus on mental health and wellness, improving self-esteem and confidence, building and improving relationships, and more. Drop-in group; no RSVP needed to join.
