Thanks to a $1 million gift and $1 million in matching funds, UMass Amherst will create a new endowed faculty chair in 2006 to focus initially on the development and application of sophisticated multi-use sensor networks used to measure a wide range of environmental conditions, including weather phenomena such as ice-cap melting, ocean events such as tsunamis and to make precise geological measurements.
