Development of Thesis (25%)

*coherence of argument; organization of ideas; overall development

*development—substantial and thoughtful engagement with texts?

*substantiation of individual points (examples, quotes, concrete details;

analytical deductions)

Presentation of the Paper

Language –Usage and Style (25%)

*grammar and syntax (subject-verb; pronoun-antecedent;

verb tense; possessive pronouns; demonstrative pronouns; etc.)

*diction (slang, idioms, incorrect word choice)

*clarity and concision in sentence construction

(major errors: run-ons, fragments, comma splices)

*creative expository prose (concrete imagery, details, poetic license);

clarity of prose style

Mechanics and Punctuation (12.5%)

*punctuation (commas; semicolons; colons; apostrophes;

hyphens; terminal punctuation; and quotation marks)

*citation of secondary sources
