Assistant Professor in Comparative Literature

The Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures, the Program in Comparative Literature and the Commonwealth Honors College invite applications for a position as Assistant Professor, tenure track, to begin September 2011. Specialization in premodern mythologies and literatures of the Mediterranean basin (“Middle East” preferred) including expertise in Arabic literatures and cinema and the ability to teach them in English translation and within a comparative perspective. Candidate must have Ph.D. in hand by August 31, 2011, demonstrated excellence in teaching, and native or near-native fluency in English and two languages of the Mediterranean basin, one of which must be Arabic. The successful candidate will demonstrate an appreciation for the intercultural, multi-disciplinary, and comparative nature of the position. In addition to offering graduate seminars, the new faculty will teach honors courses that serve the campus honors community and be engaged in and help strengthen the departmental honors program. Assistant Professor of Interpreting Studies

The Program in Comparative Literature, which houses a dynamic Translation Studies Program, and is a unit of the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures, invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, to begin September 2011. The successful candidate will teach consecutive and simultaneous interpreting and will also strengthen the department's offerings in literary and cultural studies. Course assignments will include a two-semester interpreter training sequence in a language-neutral environment, plus a combination of undergraduate and graduate courses in Comparative Literature/ Translation Studies, taught in English. Language expertise in at least one of the following is required: Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, or Spanish. We seek candidates who have a strong background in interpreting studies theory and practice as well as strong scholarly promise. We welcome interdisciplinary approaches. Expertise in multimedia interpreting, prior teaching experience with international and minority students, and experience in community outreach are desirable assets. Ph.D. in hand by August 31, 2011. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
