Advisor in the Major

If you are a Communication Major, you have a professor assigned to you as an advisor within the major. To find this professor’s name from the SPIRE main menu, go to Academics>Advisors. Contact your advisor by phone or email for an appointment time.

Can Help with:

  • Course selection in the major
  • Checking your progress toward completing major requirements
  • General issues about the major

 

Chief Undergraduate Advisor or Undergraduate Studies Director

To schedule an appointment to see Dr. Ken Brown, the Chief Undergraduate Advisor, use the sign-up sheet outside his office, Machmer 415. To schedule an appointment to see Undergraduate Studies Director, contact Ms. April Tidlund in Machmer 417 (Tel: 413-545-3539) between the hours of 10:00 a.m.-12:00 noon and 1:00-4:00 p.m.

Can Help with:

  • Checking your progress toward completing major requirements
  • Course substitutions from other departments
  • Prior approvals for national and international study programs
  • Transfer of Communication courses taken at other universities
  • Academic Advisor Credit Alert holds

 

Global Education Advising Office

If Communication is your primary major, you must complete a 5-course Global Education College requirement or you will not graduate. Visit the Global Education Advising Office (Machmer E-20, tel. 577-1057) as soon as you are admitted to the major. Your SPIRE Degree Progress Report will not work properly for Global Education until you visit this office and declare an option.

  • Declaring a Global Education option

 

Arts and Sciences Dean’s Office

Communication Majors should visit a Dean in the Arts and Sciences Advising Office (Machmer E-24, tel. 545-2192) for any matter (listed to the right) requiring a Dean’s approval or signature.

Can Help with:

  • Approving late adds, late drops, late changes in grading basis
  • Course withdrawals
  • Enrolling in more than 18 credits during a semester
  • Petitions to enroll beyond the 10th semester
  • Dean’s holds
  • Reinstatement from suspension or dismissal
  • Complicated Gen Ed requirement questions

 

Senior Staff in the Records Office

The Senior Staff in the Records Office are responsible for clearing seniors for graduation (Whitmore 201, tel. 545-0555).

Can Help with:

  • Clearing University (Gen Ed) requirements
  • Final clearances for graduation
  • Changes in degree (graduation) dates
