GloTech Lab presents Empowering Election Integrity in the Global Majority, the Lab’s official launch event and “coming out” party to the UMass community and beyond Friday, April 19 in the COMM HUB (ILC N301). This GloTech workshop follows through with their long-term efforts to build transnational solidarities in the tech and democracy space–especially in a year of pivotal elections in Brazil, India, Ghana, South Africa, South Korea, and the United States.

As part of a long-term community engaged research partnership between faculty and students in the Department of Communication at UMass and Deerfield Elementary School around media literacy education, Communication PhD students created lesson plans about how data is collected online and used to send internet users targeted ads.

Graduate student Diana Kasem has received a 2024 Romantan International Fieldwork Grant. Using “khayal ilmi” —Arab science fiction (ASF)— as a case study, her dissertation project explores the unique features of imaginary worlds in science fiction (SF) films and their relation to reality whilefilling gaps in existing ASF film discourses.

Ph.D. Candidate Nora Suren has been awarded the 2024 Suopis Communication Graduate Fellowship to support her dissertation entitled "Navigating Double Oppression Online: How Digital Content Creators Maintain Ideological Integrity under Algorithmic Bias and Turkish Authoritarianism." She plans to utilize the Suopis funds to expedite her dissertation progress, including in-person fieldwork in Turkey this summer and covering conference fees for the Association of Internet Researchers (AoIR) conference in England.

In addition to our team of full-time faculty and staff, the Comm Department is home to a cohort of incredibly bright PhD students. One of these students is Shahnaz Bashir, who comes to us from the University of Kashmir in India where he obtained his Masters with Rank 1: University Gold Medal and Award of Merit in Mass Communication and Journalism. Alongside the pursuit of his Masters, Shahnaz taught classes on narrative journalism and conflict reporting.
