In November, UMass Alumni joined current Department of Communication students in the ILC Hub for the annual Career Alumni Networking Night. Students and faculty had the opportunity to listen and talk to alums from a variety of career stages about their experiences while at UMass and their lives after graduation. 
 
Four alums returned to campus for the event. One of them, Ruthchneidy Benjamin ‘17, came all the way from New York. Benjamin now works as a marketing specialist for WebMD Health Services in New York City.
Casey Lyons

This semester, Comm Senior Casey Lyons is studying abroad in Lisbon, Portugal. She says financial support from a fellowship and scholarship money made it possible for her to go abroad. She wants to learn more about how communication functions outside of the U.S.

“This opportunity will allow me to understand the modes of communication in a new cultural context," said Lyons, "which is something I'm really excited about.

In any given semester, students might have the option to take COMM 338, Children, Teens, and Media, a course that explores the role of media (television, Internet, video games, film, etc.) in shaping the lives of children and teens. This past summer the opportunity came with a chance to examine those ideas in not just the United States, but also the United Kingdom, and other locations around the globe. The students who took the course this past summer with faculty members Erica Scharrer and Lynn Phillips, did so as part of a study abroad program at Trinity College, Oxford, in England.

Department of Communication Professor and Chair Mari Castañeda, appointed SBS Associate Dean for Equity and Inclusion. The position includes oversight of efforts to internationalize the student and faculty experience. Castañeda will continue to serve as chair of the department through the end of the fall semester.

We seek theoretical and methodological innovation in researching the constitutive role of communication and information infrastructures in people's experience of the built environment.
