A Comm professor will be at the helm of the Massachusetts Multicultural Film Festival (MMFF) as it enters its 25th year. Shawn Shimpach, Ph.D., associate professor in the Communication department, has been appointed director of the MMFF. Shimpach, a self-described cinephile, who calls it a “sweet assignment,” will be curating the events, organizing the screenings, and coordinating with guest speakers and filmmakers.

Professor Marty Norden of the Communication Department is this year’s program chair. He is working alongside recently retired UMass Amherst history professor Rob Weir, NEPCA’s longtime executive secretary and treasurer.

Faculty, staff, and students gathered in the Integrative Learning Center this semester, for the premiere screening of the film The Great White Hoax. The film features acclaimed anti-racist educator and author Tim Wise, who discusses the intersectionality between race and class in American politics. Wise explores how American political leaders of both parties have been tapping into white anxiety, working to divide and conquer working class voters and shore up political support.

The internship application process can seem daunting at first. It is easy to feel overwhelmed or discouraged. For Communication student Shakinah Starks ’19, like many other students, it was not immediate success. After applying to what she says were more than 200 internship openings for the summer, she realized she needed help.

So, she booked an appointment with Chief Undergraduate Advisor, Allison Butler, for advice. Butler told her she needed a new approach, so they embarked on a plan of action and that meant using the resources available to Starks–UMass alumni.

Jonathan Corpus Ong joins the Department of Communication at UMass Amherst as Associate Professor of Global Digital Media. Trained in ethnographic methods, his approach to the study of communication is through long-term immersion and inquiry into how media matter in the everyday lives of ordinary people–particularly from communities we know little about.
