World renowned scholar is the new chair of the Department of Communication

Sut Jhally, Ph.D.

Professor Sut Jhally is the new chair of the UMass Amherst Department of Communication. Jhally is the founder of Media Education Foundation and an award-winning teacher, and author of numerous books and articles on media.

Jhally, is known as the producer and director of a number of films and videos (including Dreamworlds: Desire/Sex/Power in Music Video; Tough Guise: Media, Violence and the Crisis of Masculinity; and Hijacking Catastrophe: 9/11, Fear & the Selling of American Empire) that deal with issues ranging from gender, sexuality and race to commercialism, violence and politics.

Jhally's areas of interest include popular culture and media from the interdependent perspectives of critical cultural studies and political economy. While his focus is advertising and consumer culture, he is broadly concerned with ideology, consciousness, and politics. He has been involved in many book projects as author and editor, and currently his research is expressed in the form of educational videos through his work with the Media Education Foundation.
