Thanks to a generous gift provided by alumna Elaine Nord, Communication majors planning to do mass media-related internships during the summer may now apply for funding through the Elaine E. Nord Internship Fund for Creative Communications. Nord, who graduated from UMass Amherst in 1981 with a degree in what was then called Communication Studies, established the competitive fund to help one Comm student per year to cover some of his/her expenses associated with an internship.

Prof. Kevin Anderson and Comm alumnus Alex Kamb ’15 are collaborating on a feature-length film, titled Running Embers. Working with a cast and crew consisting mainly of UMass Amherst students, Kevin and Alex recently produced a “Proof of Concept” trailer for Running Embers. Patrick Sabbs, a 1984 UMass Amherst graduate who majored in Communication, has been nominated by Gov. Charlie Baker for a Springfield District Court judgeship. Patrick, who began his post-UMass career at WWLP-TV in Springfield, earned a law degree in the mid-1990s and served for many years as an Assistant District Attorney in Hampden County. Marina Qutab, a Communication junior from Rutland, Mass., was awarded second place in this year's Project Green Challenge (PGC), a competition that attracted entries from nearly 4,000 students from around the world. The PGC is an initiative of Turning Green, a student-led movement devoted to education and advocacy around environmentally sustainable and socially responsible choices.
