Paula Gardner, who earned a PhD in Communication from UMass Amherst in 2001, has been chosen as President Elect Select of the International Communication Association. She is currently Associate Professor and Asper Chair in Communications at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Her research interests include feminist media studies, digital culture, and affective and biometric technological practices. Click here for the announcement of her ICA presidency election.

Submissions are now being accepted for the Department of Communication's 5th Annual Student Showcase & Awards event, to be held on Wed., April 6. Comm majors are invited to submit their creative/academic work in any of the following five categories: Audio-Visual, Civic Engagement/Community Service, Speech/Rhetoric/ Performance, Writing, and Research. The deadline for all submissions is Tues., March 1, and works in progress are welcome.

Thanks to a generous gift provided by alumna Elaine Nord, Communication majors planning to do mass media-related internships during the summer may now apply for funding through the Elaine E. Nord Internship Fund for Creative Communications. Nord, who graduated from UMass Amherst in 1981 with a degree in what was then called Communication Studies, established the competitive fund to help one Comm student per year to cover some of his/her expenses associated with an internship.

Working with a cast and crew consisting mainly of UMass Amherst students, Kevin and Alex recently produced a “Proof of Concept” trailer for Running Embers. Patrick Sabbs, a 1984 UMass Amherst graduate who majored in Communication, has been nominated by Gov. Charlie Baker for a Springfield District Court judgeship. Patrick, who began his post-UMass career at WWLP-TV in Springfield, earned a law degree in the mid-1990s and served for many years as an Assistant District Attorney in Hampden County.
