Prof. Claudio Moreira has won a Distinguished Teaching Award, the university's highest honor for pedagogical excellence and the only student-initiated recognition of extraordinary teaching. The Department of Communication has announced a week-long summer program for high school students interested in honing their media literacy and production skills. Titled "Create/Critique: Media Making in the Digital Age," the class will be taught by Prof. Allison Butler and will take full advantage of the department's state-of-the-art production facilities in the Integrative Learning Center. Paula Gardner, who earned a PhD in Communication from UMass Amherst in 2001, has been chosen as President Elect Select of the International Communication Association. She is currently Associate Professor and Asper Chair in Communications at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Submissions are now being accepted for the Department of Communication's 5th Annual Student Showcase & Awards event, to be held on Wed., April 6. Comm majors are invited to submit their creative/academic work in any of the following five categories: Audio-Visual, Civic Engagement/Community Service, Speech/Rhetoric/ Performance, Writing, and Research. The deadline for all submissions is Tues., March 1, and works in progress are welcome.

Thanks to a generous gift provided by alumna Elaine Nord, Communication majors planning to do mass media-related internships during the summer may now apply for funding through the Elaine E. Nord Internship Fund for Creative Communications. Nord, who graduated from UMass Amherst in 1981 with a degree in what was then called Communication Studies, established the competitive fund to help one Comm student per year to cover some of his/her expenses associated with an internship.
