Prof. Jeff Niederdeppe of Cornell University's Department of Communication will give a talk as part of the department's colloquium series this semester.  The title of his presentation is "Frames, Stories, and Images: Message Strategies to Increase Public Legislator Support for Social Policies to Reduce Obesity."  His talk will take place at 9:30-11 a.m. on Friday, April 18, in Campus Center 911-915.  More information about Prof. Niederdeppe's presentation is below.

The Communication Student Awards and Showcase event will take place on Tuesday, April 8, at 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Cape Cod Lounge in the Student Union. An awards ceremony honoring the work of Communication undergraduates will be followed by public presentations of the students' projects.

Prof. Emily West will give a talk at the Jones Library in Amherst on April 3 at 7-8:30 p.m. as part of the Town/Gown Discussion Series. The title of her presentation is "Buying the Affordable Care Act: Health Care Consumerism and Attitudes to Health Care Policy."

Mary Gray, Associate Professor of Communication at Indiana University and Senior Researcher with the Microsoft Research Institute, will give a talk titled "Making Sense of Crowdwork: A Grounded Approach to the Political Economies of Digital Labor."  Her talk will take place on Tuesday, April 1 at 12:00 to 1:45 in 903 Campus Center.

Department of Communication's Alumni Career Event

The Communication Department's annual alumni career event will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 25 in the Cape Cod Lounge in the Student Union.  At least a half dozen COMM alums at various stages of their careers will be returning to campus that day to meet with current COMM students and offer career advice and support.

A Pioneer Valley Bread House gathering will take place on Monday, March 24, at 4 to 6 p.m. Join bread lovers of all ages in building stronger communities by kneading together and sharing stories, art, and freshly baked bread. The event will take place at the Five College Women's Studies Research Center, 83 College St., South Hadley, MA. All ingredients are provided and the event is free (donations will be accepted). Mari Castañeda will take part in a panel discussion titled "Meaningful Student Activism: Finding Your Voice in College."  Other participants will include Graciela Monteagudo of the Social Thought and Political Economy (STPEC) Program and Jennifer Sandler of the Anthropology Dept.  This event, organized by the UMass Amherst Defined Residential Communities, will take place on Tuesday, February 26, at 5-7 p.m. at the University Club.
